A news release from the California Highway Patrol stated the agency along with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department and the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office will conduct a sobriety checkpoint on Friday, Aug. 30 on U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe.

Officers trained to detect alcohol and drug use will conduct the checkpoint.

Officers stated in the release that they want to make a safer driving environment with a high volume of traffic in the area.

“A sobriety checkpoint is an effective tool for achieving this goal and is designed to augment existing patrol operations. By publicizing our efforts we believe that we can deter motorists from drinking and driving,” CHP Lt. Brian Cook said in the release.

Cook said traffic volume will dictate the number of vehicles checked by officers. Drivers suspected to be under the influence of alcohol, drugs or both will most likely be arrested and spend a night in the county’s South Lake Tahoe Jail. “Our objective is to send a clear message to those considering mixing alcohol and/or drugs with driving,” Cook said in the release. “We will be looking for you.”

The program is funded by a California Office of Traffic Safety grant through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency, the release stated.
